Guthrie, pics Guthrie Castle Castles Eilean Donan castle " in Scotland is another possible venue for a Scottish wedding . An 18th-century barracks at the heart of Edinburgh Castle is set to be transformed into the ultimate wedding venue. The Queen Anne building was formerly a barracks then a museum, but has been derelict for years. Historic Scotland, which runs the Castle, has launched a huge restoration project after being forced to turn away couples planning to hold weddings with more than 40 guests. Members of the armed forces are entitled to hold their wedding ceremony at St Margaret's Chapel at the castle . From next April, the Castle will be able to house weddings three times the size of events held in its gatehouse suite. A day at the venue, which will be able to hold 120 people, costs £1750. The price rises to £4000 to cover the evening at the hall, which is in the Castle's Crown Square. Gillian Macdonald, Historic Scotland functions manager, said the renovation of the hall was part of a £3.5 million project to recreate the Castle's ancient prison vaults. Guests will be able to visit the new vaults attraction as well as have photographs taken on site as part of the wedding deal. Ms Macdonald said: "At the moment we can only hold wedding groups of up to 40 people but this new special events venue will be able to hold 120. "We also plan to apply for a civil licence so that we can hold registrar weddings as well as religious ones with a minister. "We decided to renovate the Queen Anne building because we have noticed there is definitely a market for bigger weddings. "People often come along to inquire but have been disappointed when they discover we can't hold as many people as they wish. "Hopefully we will be able to capture this other market and the new hall will attract a lot of interest." Castle weddings offer a romantic venue for a wedding . " castle weddings " with large
receptions can be held at the Castle in its Jacobite Room,
but it doesn't have facilities for wedding ceremonies. Joan
Morgan, owner of city wedding planning company Afterhours,
in Lockharton Avenue, welcomed the move. "The more variation
a venue has the more scope there is," she said. "The Castle
is going to get more business by offering a larger area for
weddings. "They have obviously seen the potential problem of
having a small venue." Deputy Lord Provost Steve Cardownie,
added: "Having been through the process three times it's
fantastic news that more people will be able to use
Edinburgh Castle. There is no more spectacular venue than
the Castle and it's great to hear that more people will be
able to avail themselves following Historic Scotland's
extended venue. "If anyone is daft enough to take the plunge
with me then I will certainly consider it as a venue for my
fourth wedding." Clare Damodaran, Edinburgh and Lothians
Tourist Board spokeswoman, said: "Although we don't have any
specific figures regarding the importance of weddings in the
area to tourism, we do know that 19 per cent of people from
the UK who come to Edinburgh do so to visit their friends
and relatives. "People getting married will certainly
contribute to this. Edinburgh and Lothians Tourist Board
does receive inquiries about venues for weddings,
particularly after high-profile celebrity weddings in
Scotland such as Madonna's and Stella McCartney's.
"Edinburgh Castle has to be one of the most romantic venues
in the UK in which to get married, so increasing its
capacity so significantly can only be a good thing." A
permanent interactive exhibition inside the 16th-century
vaults will tell the stories of prisoners held there during
the American War of Independence, the French Revolution and
other 18th-century conflicts. Three prison doors from the
mid-18th century - which were carved with names and other
graffiti, including a crude depiction of a ship flying the
Stars and Stripes - will feature in the display. Weddings can be held at Eilean Donan
