" One of my favorite castles is located on the outskirts of the lovely Borders town of Peebles. It is Neidpath Castle , which is on the banks of the River Tweed, one mile outside of Peebles. The best view of the castle is when you come from the west before you get to Peebles, however the road is narrow so it is hard to stop if you are driving. The castle is a tower style castle, originated erected in 1370 by the Hays family. They later became the Earls of Tweeddale who sold the estate in 1686 to the Douglas Dukes of Queensberry. The castle became neglected and in 1810 it passed to the Earl of Wemyss whose heir became Lord Neidpath. To

There is a spiral stone staircase that leads up to the 2nd floor where their is a bedroom named for Mary Queen of Scots who stayed at the castle in 1563. James VI also stayed at Neidpath in 1587. The castle is haunted by the daughter of a former owner whose father didn't approve of her choice of suiter so he sent the young man off to fight for his country, and his daughter wasted away from lonliness and sorrow. When he returned to the castle for her, he didn't recognize the frail looking girl and he left, thinking she had departed the castle. When there are events at the castle, the ghost quite often makes herself known by rattling doors and windows around the castle.
