confirmed this week that they had already spoken to

key public partners, to secure the future of the castle and
realise its full potential.The partnership believed the
castle could become a first-class corporate, leisure or
tourism destination. With a co-ordinated approach, they felt
the development of the castle and its grounds would bring
economic benefits to the community and enhance the public
environment.A Grade A Listed property, it incorporates
remnants of the 17th century Seaforth Lodge, and has
accommodation on four main floors. There are around 20
principal/public rooms and up to 30 guest bedrooms. The
public rooms include a ballroom, dining room, and library on
the ground floor. The castle was originally built in the
1840s as a mansion house by Sir James Matheson - co-founder
of the Jardine Matheson company.The building was the
original home of Lews Castle College and subsequently it
came into the ownership of the Western Isles Council.
Following 40 years of educational use, the castle has been
vacant since 1997.
