HELMSLEY Castle, which has overlooked the
picturesque market town at the heart of the North York Moors
for more than 1,000 years, will benefit from a £900,000
scheme to improve its visitor facilities.
The scheme has been masterminded by
English Heritage and regional development agency Yorkshire
Forward, who have won funding from the European Regional
Development Fund.
There will be a new visitor centre,
exhibition space, an audio tour and improved
access.
It is hoped the project will boost the
local tourist economy which has been hit by the foot and
mouth outbreak and rural decline.
David Fraser, English Heritage's regional
director, dubbed the castle "an unrecognised gem".
The castle, which dates back to 1120,
welcomes about 25,000 visitors a year.
It is anticipated that this figure could
rise to 45,000 once improvements have been put in
place.
