Castle was built in 1585 and originally
commissioned by Sir John Maxwell, 12th of
Pollock.
Over
the door of the castle there is an
inscription:
1585

Haggs
Castle is Glasgow's oldest inhabited
secular building and it was the Maxwell
family's home for 10 years .
In
1747, Sir John Maxwell, 3rd Baronet, began
building a new house in Pollok Park and
completed it in 1752 .The Maxwells moved
into Pollok House and Haggs Castle became
totally neglected.
Repairs
to the building started in the mid 19th
century and in 1860, Sir John Maxwell, 9th
Baronet made it the residence of his
estate factor.
Sir
John Stirling-Maxwell added rooms and a
new entrance and staircase . It
was sold again in 1997 and refurbished to
its present condition.
