The square keep in the north-east probably dates
to the 14th century. The Fairy Tower was added in
the 16th century. The old keep was in ruins by the
end of the 18th century and was rebuilt as an
extension to the Fairy Tower. In the 1840s it was
again extended and rebuilt .
It is said that to reach Dunvegan Castle you
must cross the Fairy Bridge. It was said that a
horse could not be ridden or led across the bridge
without the animal losing control. Legend states
that a member of the MacLeod clan married a fairy
and the couple lived happily for many years. In
time the man aged but the Fairy did not and the
time came for her to return to her people. They
said their farewells at the Fairy Bridge and the
fairy bestowed on her husband a flag which would
grant the MacLeods three wishes. Twice the MacLeods
have used the power of the Flag, in 1490 at the
battle of Glendale and then in 1580 at Trumpan. The
MacLeods were victorious each time. The Fairy flag
is on display in the Fairy room inside the
Castle.
